Zanzibar is located off the coast of Tanzania and consists of two islands: Zanzibar and Pemba, separated from the mainland by the Zanzibar Channel. This region is a major producer of spices such as cloves, cinnamon and pepper.
Its gastronomy is a fusion of Arab, African and Indian influences and spices such as cinnamon, ginger and cloves, among others, give a unique character to traditional cooking. Typical dishes include ugali, spicy rice with potatoes, meat, fish and biriani, with lamb, as well as a wide variety of tropical fruits.
Zanzibar is home to an interesting meeting of African and Arab culture. Visit Stone Town, with its alleyways and Arab-influenced architecture, where narrow streets and houses with wooden doors worked to perfection form mazes where it is easy to get lost. This is a town where the old mansions, some still rich in detail, represent a period of past glory. Nowadays, there is some decadence in their maintenance, which does not take away the romantic touch of the past.
After slavery and the ivory trade and clove plantations, Zanzibar has found in tourism a reason to reinvent itself. Smell the aromas of nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon or enjoy its picture postcard beaches with palm trees, clear waters and coral reefs.
